Well, not really. But the political blogging should. I mean, really. What is the point? Who are we trying to impress, convince or prove wrong? Or are we just getting “the word out?”
We can impress ourselves and those who think like us. (And so far I am less than impressed.)
We can convince no one (Really? You think that your blog will provide someone with a Damascus Road conversion story? Seriously? You think that?)
We can prove others wrong all day long, but what is the point? (Seriously, you think that you being right proves something more than just your point?) Because being right does not mean anything unless it can make some sort of change. And really who are you kidding? What kind of change have you been able to spark as a result of your blog?
We can get the word out, over and over again. But if we all have the same message (vote for me on the Canadian Blog Awards, yeah!!) then maybe the word already is out.
And so, I am hanging up my political blogger hat. I have other ideas for this space. They may come to nothing, but I have high hopes.
I am looking for at least one good, solid reason not to purge all of the previous posts on my site and then change course dramastically.
Blogs are easily ignored. In fact I generally ignore them. Their power is like power found anywhere else. Power only exists where it is granted. And usually the only people who grant power to blogs are those who believe the power of their own blog.
I also question my contribution. I don’t believe in political blogging. Blogging, if merely a log of thoughts, is useful to provide information but not in convincing others. I usually look for information in sources which I trust and not in places where I question the messenger. Political blogging is a log of political thoughts and will not be very convincing to those who already oppose those politics. Preaching to the choir is not really all that worthwhile of a hobby.
I binged earlier this year thinking that I may then motivate myself to continue blogging about politics and whatnot. But that was unfruitful because of my lack of faith. It was also unfruitful because I could not see any truly helpful analysis of politics which could supplement or correct the analysis the tv, cable and internet news could provide.
And so, now it is time to purge. But I will wait to weigh my potential actions.
