Gomery Gomery Gomery

Is the news of the news before the news actually airs considered to be news? I am reminded (by Anacharsis no less) that if it is new to him then it is news. But that brings into question the whole news-worthiness of the pre-Gomery report quips from politicians. Specifically the Conservatives.

No doubt Chretien’s government will be the focus and Paul Martin may be just a bruised apple (not a full-blown bad apple). But come on, the Conservatives have jumped the gun on this one. Sir Almighty and All-righteous robotic Stephen Harper claims the PM will set the Gomery report on spin. It is without question that the opposition party will do the same.

It is the job of the opposition party to yell, scream and cry whenever the ruling party does anything. I don’t know what the exact definition of “opposition” is, but I figure it has something to do with opposing things and crying whenever they don’t fare too well. And then they cry when they are not privy to the same information that the ruling party have. The Liberals received the Gomery report on Monday and the Conservatives whine that they have to wait. Why would the Conservatives want it early except to do the same thing they charge the Liberals of, which is slanting the report in their favour?

In fact the Liberal have not lost much ground to the Conservatives through-out this ordeal. The Liberals lead the Conservatives by 12 points and the NDP trails the opposition by about 8 points.

But all this is news of the up-coming news and is mere speculation. Is this news?

Is it news that the Liberals will see things their way and the Conservatives will interpret it differently? Is it news that a politician will not see eye-to-eye with another politician? Is it news that a politician in power did things to benefit his party? Is it news that someone abused their power? Is it news that Stephen Harper is a robot? Is it news that Paul Martin knows nothing about what is going on around him? Is it news that the Conservatives do not understand Canadians? Is it news that the NDP is like a screaming wall-flower? Is it news that the Gomery report may or may not change anything?

It seems that the Conservatives treat the name of “Gomery” like that of “Betelgeuse” hoping that he will appear? But what was spin-master Martin doing when the Gomery report arrived for his pre-release party? Talking to trick-or-treating toddlers. Does not seem like he was too busy working on his propaganda machine.

I bet that little or nothing will really change in the political world. This report will just let the Conservatives yell and stamp their feet a little. If Paul Martin is not implicated in this then I also would bet that support for the Liberals will increase. If Harper keeps acting up like he is I bet that the Conservatives will continue dropping in popularity.

Hopefully the Cons will disappear into the ethos and the NDP will become the official opposition. In my opinion this is highly possible and even likely. But then again there was a time when the CCF was the leader in public opinion polls but then came in 3rd after the ballots were cast. Who knows, who cares? This is all speculation and Harper, if he knows what is good for him, will stop speculating and will start drying the tears and acting like a person. That is the only way he will win respect from anyone even if it is not me.
